課程概述

Spring 2015 Freshman English, second semester

Welcome back to the second semester of FE. I look forward to another chance to improve our English skills, not just in writing and reading, but also in speaking. Henry has graciously agreed to be our TA again, and I thank him for a job well done, although I am not entirely certain at this point that we will be able to hire him. Nevertheless, he and I will map out a plan for this semester and most likely overhaul the required assignments to include not just writing tasks. I will continue to give you handouts in English and lecture on various topics that may pique your curiosity in the first 2 hours and let Henry take over the last hour with his interesting activities. This semester I want more feedback and input from you. I encourage you to choose reading materials for the lectures. Alternatively, you can suggest topics or areas that you find interesting to read. Since you are mostly liberal arts majors, you may want to pick a poem or two or even a short story. And if you are not a big fan of lectures, we can always switch to a more interactive format for our meetings. Although you cannot count on me to sing or act, Henry is a born actor. The aim of this course remains unchanged. Our goal is to help you develop authentic English skills, skills that may make a difference in your career down the road. I am very happy with your performance last semester and want you to feel better rewarded this time. If there is anything I really want to change, I want more oral participation from you. I will make sure that I give all of you equal attention, and that each of you will have a chance to answer my questions in class. Again, I emphasize regular attendance not just because it is mandated by university law, but more because the classroom is where education truly takes place, and if you are absent, you forfeit your chances. If you can maintain a solid attendance record, you can pretty much expect the same generous grades from me, based on the same formula we used last semester. (A copy of last semester's Course Description is attached below for your reference.) Remember, after this semester, you will not be entitled to virtually free, high-quality English lessons, and you will have to pay less qualified people to revise your essays and writing drafts. As always, your feedback and comments are most welcome. You can reach me by sending me an email (drleung@ntu.edu.tw) or via Henry, assuming that he will stay with us (we will find out in March. I wish all of you a pleasant and productive semester so you can enjoy your summer break without feeling guilty. Cheers!

Course description
This course attempts to help students develop a feeling for contemporary English (primarily the American version) through close reading of selected essays and articles published in the respectable media. Article topics cover a wide range of subjects and styles. Classroom activities include regular lectures and Q&A sessions plus some movie viewing. Since we meet at 9:10 in the morning, I expect you to be punctual. All lectures will be delivered in English. Every effort is made to reduce the tension and anxiety associated with learning a foreign language in the classroom so you can settle spontaneously in a receptive mode and feel uninhibited when the urge to perform kicks in. And since most of you come from elite high schools, I do expect you to perform with confidence in class, as I also expect you to like English and be willing to improve your English skills.

Course objective
The first aim is to steer you away from the textbook English you have been accustomed to since high school. Students learn to precisely articulate their views both in speaking and in writing using contemporary expressions and structures assimilated through reading assignments and practice sessions in class. While lectures rarely focus on the grammatical aspects of the writing (unless a specific request is made), idiomatic usage will be analyzed in appropriate context and fully explained. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to perform in class, as I will frequently prompt you with questions about specific expressions and meanings. As part of the training for public speech, I will also ask you to read passages out loud in class. We meet for 3 hours every Tuesday. I will do the first 2 hours, and my assistant Henry Pai will handle the last session.

This semester our Tuesday class will be broken down into 3 sessions: 9:10-10 a.m., 10:10-11:00 a.m., 11:10-12:00 noon. Note that there will be a 10-minute break (not 20) between sessions.

Do’s and Don’t’s
You are expected to attend 3 full sessions on Tuesday. Regular attendance and participation in Q&A sessions are required. There will be 3 writing assignments (including the final), but no midterm. No dutiful student will fail this course. You can also earn extra points by submitting a short paper in English. Repeaters are those who have a horrible absence record (3 or more unexcused absences) or cheat in exams. Plagiarism is not acceptable behavior.

You can use you tablet or notebook computer (or a smartphone) in class only when I ask you to look up certain information on the Internet. Do not use LINE or FB or any other social media in class.

Textbooks
English articles will be supplied by the instructor via the Internet. The articles will cover a wide range of topics, such as science, economics, politics, literature, poetry, education, social criticism, and whatnot. If you want, you can suggest topics or articles for class discussion. You’ll need access to a good English-English learners’ dictionary.

Grading
A student who is in good standing (i.e., completes all assignments on time, a solid attendance record, and participation in classroom activities) will be entitled to the following grading scheme (see also “Do’s and Don’t’s” above): Writing assignments 50%, final 40%, bonus for good behavior 10%.
